The \u00a0Dordogne has\u00a0a continental climate, influenced by the Mediterranean see and the Atlantic ocean. It\u2019s a climate with warm summers but it can \u00a0also be quite cold in winter. The weather however feels \u00a0almost always pleasant ,this is due to the absence of wind.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dordogne\">Dordogne<\/a>\u00a0is home to approximately 380,000 inhabitants in an area of 9225 km\u00b2.\u00a0Therefore, the Dordogne is the third largest department of France.\u00a0It is located in the Aquitaine region and is crossed by the motorway A 89 (Bordeaux \u2013 Lyon).\u00a0The four major cities are Perigueux, Bergerac, Nontron and Sarlat.\u00a0In 1790 the country was divided into departments, these were usually given the name of the main river and so this department was called\u00a0\u201cDordogne\u201d.\u00a0Before that, the region was called P\u00e9rigord.(due to the Gauls who inhabited this area, called P\u00e9trocorii).<br \/>\nThe county Perigord originated in the 11th century and later fell to the home of Albret. Under Henry IV, the P\u00e9rigord \u00a0was part of the French Crown. These natural assets\u00a0have led to the creation of the\u00a0Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional P\u00e9rigord Limousin, which extends across two d\u00e9partements. One of the park\u2019s main aims is to protect\u00a0and conserve local resources and traditional skills.\u00a0On the border with the Charente, natural features such as meadows, wooded hills, cultivated fields on chalky plateaux, and the lakes and trees of the For\u00eat\u00a0de la Double combine to create the gentle and harmonious landscapes of the Val de Dronne.\u00a0The attractive natural landscapes of the region are further embellished by its charming traditional houses, Romanesque art and fine architecture visible in\u00a0towns such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brant%C3%B4me_(Dordogne)\">Brant\u00f4me<\/a>\u00a0and St Jean de C\u00f4le.<\/p>\n<p>Situated in the heart of the d\u00e9partement,\u00a0<strong>the White P\u00e9rigord<\/strong>\u00a0takes its name from the whiteness of the\u00a0region\u2019s stone, which is so prized by sculptors. The area is crossed by the Isle and Auv\u00e9z\u00e8re rivers, which\u00a0offer excellent fishing, and is also home to\u00a0P\u00e9rigueux, the old city of Vesunna with its Gallo-Roman\u00a0remains. P\u00e9rigueux, the capital of the d\u00e9partement, is a \u201cTown of Art and History\u201d, with narrow streets\u00a0bordered by townhouses in its protected historical districts and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amiscathedralesaintfront.fr\/cathedrale-saint-front-perigueux\">the Saint-Front cathedral<\/a>, a stopping\u00a0point along\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/669\/\">the Way of St James\u00a0UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/a>.\u00a0This region is traditionally known for its homely cuisine, often\u00a0flavoured with truffles, a local delicacy which is highlighted at\u00a0the eco-museum in Sorges. Regional produce, such as\u00a0strawberries and fatted ducks and geese, has pride of place in\u00a0the lively markets which are held here throughout the year.\u00a0A trip to the White P\u00e9rigord would not be\u00a0complete without a visit to its castles,\u00a0delightful villages and museums dedicated\u00a0to local crafts and traditions.<\/p>\n<p>In the south-east of the d\u00e9partement,\u00a0<strong>the Black P\u00e9rigord<\/strong>\u00a0is recognised worldwide for the wealth of prehistoric remains in the V\u00e9z\u00e8re and Dordogne valleys and\u00a0has been designated as an International Centre for Prehistory. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/85\">V\u00e9z\u00e8re valley<\/a>\u00a0is home to some of the richest prehistoric sites in Europe, including\u00a0Palaeolithic sites, caves and natural rock shelters. Fifteen of these decorated sites are classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.\u00a0The Dordogne river meanders between impressive limestone cliffs and\u00a0holm oak forests. This valley has a concentration of the most beautiful\u00a0buildings of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, including castles\u00a0perched on rocky promontories, the villages of Domme, Beynac\u00a0and La Roque-Gageac and, of course, Sarlat, officially classified\u00a0as a \u201cVille d\u2019Art et d\u2019Histoire\u201d (\u201cTown of Art and History\u201d).\u00a0With its\u00a0<em>lauze\u00a0<\/em>stone roofs,\u00a0Sarlat\u00a0has retained much of\u00a0its extraordinary architecture, characterised by\u00a0medieval houses and Renaissance mansions.\u00a0Most of its monuments are listed or protected\u00a0historic monuments.<\/p>\n<p>Vineyards and bastide towns are the two jewels of\u00a0<strong>the Purple P\u00e9rigord<\/strong>,\u00a0situated to the south-west of the d\u00e9partement. Standing in the heart of these\u00a0famous vineyards which cover an area of 12,000 hectares (the region has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vins-web.fr\/vignoble-du-sud-ouest\/vin-de-bergerac-dordogne.html#:~:text=Sous%2Dr%C3%A9gion%20du%20vignoble%20du,les%20VDP%20%2F%20IGP%20du%20P%C3%A9rigord.\">13\u00a0appellation contr\u00f4l\u00e9e<\/a>\u00a0 vineyards, including\u00a0Monbazillac, P\u00e9charmant, Saussignac\u00a0and Montravel) is the town of Bergerac, often mistakenly associated with Cyrano,\u00a0the famous long-nosed character created by novelist Edmond Rostand.\u00a0However, the town does boast the French author Michel de Montaigne as one\u00a0of its native sons.\u00a0The old town of Bergerac has retained much of its 14C, 15C and 16C architecture,\u00a0including many half-timbered houses. The development of the town was closely linked\u00a0to the wine industry and the proximity of the Dordogne river.
