Situated 20km from Sarlat,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/saint-amand-de-coly.php\">Saint-Amand-de-Coly<\/a>\u00a0nestles between two wooded valleys and is famous for its 12C abbey. At the other side of the d\u00e9partement, in the P\u00e9rigord Vert,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ville-saint-jean-de-cole.fr\/\">Saint-Jean-de-C\u00f4le<\/a>\u2019s history is linked with that of the Ch\u00e2teau de la Marthonie which dominates its main square, while the typical small commune of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.les-plus-beaux-villages-de-france.org\/fr\/nos-villages\/saint-leon-sur-vezere\/\">Saint-L\u00e9on-sur- V\u00e9z\u00e8re<\/a>\u00a0between Montignac and Les Eyzies boasts no fewer than three castles. Other worthwhile \u00a0villages are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.les-plus-beaux-villages-de-france.org\/fr\/limeuil-0\">Limeuil<\/a>\u00a0(overlooking the confluence\u00a0of the Dordogne and V\u00e9z\u00e8re),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.monpazier.fr\/\">Monpazier<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/laroquegageac.php\">La Roque-Gageac<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.les-plus-beaux-villages-de-france.org\/fr\/nos-villages\/belves\/\">Belv\u00e8s<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/domme.php\">Domme<\/a>, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chateau-beynac.com\/histoire\/?lang=en\">Beynac<\/a>-et-Cazenac.<\/p>\n<h3>Bastide towns and villages<\/h3>\n<p>The charming stone bastides or \u201cnew towns\u201d were built in the Middle Ages as part of a plan to create urban areas in rural surroundings. Built on both sides of the Dordogne river, they\u00a0played an important strategic role in the Hundred Years\u2019 War between the French\u00a0and English. Considered to be a perfect example of a bastide town,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.monpazier.fr\/\">Monpazier<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is without doubt the jewel of the P\u00e9rigord bastides. Founded in 1284 by Edward I of England, it has\u00a0retained many of its original medieval features, including its ramparts, central square\u00a0surrounded by arcades, and regular grid-style street plan.\u00a0Another older bastide, this time built by the French, is the town of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.francethisway.com\/places\/villefranche-du-perigord.php\">Villefranche-du-P\u00e9rigord<\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0situated on the main route south towards the Lot\u00a0et Garonne d\u00e9partement. An important cep mushroom market takes place\u00a0in season in the town\u2019s market hall. Whether they were built by the English, like\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pays-de-bergerac.com\/mairie\/beaumont-perig\/\">Beaumont-du-P\u00e9rigord<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(designed in the form of an H in memory of Henry III, the father of Edward\u00a0I),\u00a0Fonroque\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lesmagnolias-perigord.com\/en\/lalinde\/\">Lalinde<\/a><\/strong>, or by the French, like Domme,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.molieres.fr\/en\">\u00a0Moli\u00e8res<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eymet-dordogne.fr\/\">Eymet<\/a><\/strong>, these \u201cnew towns\u201d are a History<\/h3>\n<p>P\u00e9rigueux, Bergerac and Sarlat have the label \u201cVille d\u2019Art et d\u2019Histoire\u201d, with a protected historic center wich is ideal for a walk.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sarlat-la-Can%C3%A9da\">Sarlat<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is a medieval town which grew up around a large Benedictine abbey\u00a0of Carolingian origin. The old buildings here, with their traditional fa\u00e7ades and\u00a0<em>lauze\u00a0<\/em>stone roofs, have been carefully restored, thanks to a special law\u00a0governing the restoration of conservation areas. Today, most of these\u00a0buildings are listed Historic Monuments, including the emblematic\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/structurae.info\/ouvrages\/maison-de-la-boetie\">Maison de\u00a0la Bo\u00e9tie<\/a>.\u00a0Amid these authentic medieval surroundings, the Saturday morning market\u00a0brings life and colour to the town centre, with its fine selection of regional\u00a0products. The old southern-style parish church has been restored by the\u00a0architect Jean Nouvel (who also\u00a0designed the Gallo-RomanVesunna museum) and now\u00a0houses the covered market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P%C3%A9rigueux\"><strong>P\u00e9rigueux<\/strong><\/a>, the capital of the P\u00e9rigord, has a rich history dating back over\u00a02,000 years. From the ancient Gallo-Roman town of Vesunna to the heart of\u00a0the medieval and Renaissance district, the town has 39 buildings listed as\u00a0Historic Monuments in one of the largest conservation areas in France. The\u00a0ancient town of P\u00e9rigueux is represented in a new museum,\u00a0the Mus\u00e9e de\u00a0Site Gallo-Romain Vesunna, designed by the architect Jean Nouvel and\u00a0opened in 2003. This museum is home to the ruins of the Domus of Vesunna,\u00a0a large Gallo-Roman villa adorned with exceptional wall paintings.\u00a0The medieval and Renaissance conservation area extends around the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amiscathedralesaintfront.fr\/cathedrale-saint-front-perigueux\">Cath\u00e9drale Saint-Front<\/a>, one of the landmark religious buildings along\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camino_de_Santiago\">UNESCO\u2019s\u00a0Way of St James<\/a>\u00a0World Heritage site.\u00a0P\u00e9rigueux\u2019s Wednesday and Saturday markets are lively and bustling,\u00a0especially in winter, when the region\u2019s award-winning foie gras markets are\u00a0held here.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bergerac,_Dordogne\">Bergerac<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0is founded on the northern bank of the Dordogne River, in the western part of the Dordogne department. It is one of the more larger\u00a0towns in the region .The highlight of a trip to Bergerac is the old\u00a0center,\u00a0the area immediately north of the river, signposted \u2018vieille ville\u2019. This part of the town has some lovely streets and squares to explore, and a variety of boutique type shops.<br \/>The old town centre is \u00a0near\u00a0 Place Pelissiere which is a lovely square, edged with cafes and restaurants and always full of flowers. At the top edge is the St James church with its attractive bell-tower.<br \/>Around Place Pelissiere are a number of lovely medieval streets including Rue St Clar and Rue St James. Rue St Clar in particular is a narrow street with half-timbered houses. Take the time to wander around the streets of the old time and admire the interesting architecture you will see as along the way. Down towards the river is another lovely square \u2013 the Place Mirpe surrounded by half-timbered buildings and offering some welcome shade in the summer.<br \/>Visit the Maison de Vins de Bergerac in the heart of the old town. It is a beautiful old cloister dating back to the 12th century. If you are a wine enthusiast there is an exhibition showing the history of Bergerac wines and its 13 appellations.<br \/>During the summer there are occasional concerts which take place in the cloister. It is a lovely setting for them and worth going if you get the chance. In December there is usually a small but good quality Christmas Market here with products from local artisans, very useful if you are doing some Christmas shopping.<br \/>The National Tobacco Museum is based here in Bergerac, and is apparently very interesting. (Tobacco is still an important crop in the region, that you will probably see growing in the fields.)<br \/>Up from the old town, there is a newer, more modern part to Bergerac, with more conventional streets and a larger range of \u2018modern\u2019 shops.<br \/>There are a number of\u00a0 restaurants in both \u2018old-town\u2019 Bergerac among the attractive medieval half-timbered streets and in the pleasant newer parts of Bergerac. There are also various open-air cafes where you can pass a very pleasant hour just watching people going about their business.<br \/>The market, held on a Saturday, is at the higher end of the town.<br \/>After exploring Bergerac you can take an organised boat trip \u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northofthedordogne.com\/gabares.php\">gabare\u00a0<\/a>up the river (start from the car-park at the bottom end of the old-town) to see the town and the nearby countryside from a different perspective. (But be warned \u2013 several people we know have done this and said it was a waste of time because the boat didn\u2019t go far enough \u2013 I recommend you wait, and take a boat trip from one of the bases further upstream which pass by some of the riverside villages and chateaux).<br \/>Note: Any statues of Cyrano de Bergerac can be ignored \u2013 he had nothing to do with the town, and quite possibly never even visited!<br \/>Bergerac is an important wine area with a selection of good wines.
