Among the thousand or more castles, located in the P\u00e9rigord, many are open to the public,\u00a0allowing visitors to enjoy this magnificent\u00a0aspect of the region\u2019s\u00a0heritage.<br \/>Castles that are open to the public are e.g.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chateaudebridoire.com\/\">the Chateau de Bridoire<\/a>\u00a0in Ribagnac close to Bergerac, the\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau de Sauveboeuf\u00a0in Aubas close to Montignac, the Ch\u00e2teau de\u00a0Jumilhac\u00a0(13C-18C), perhaps the most romantic residence in the P\u00e9rigord Limousin area; the Ch\u00e2teau de\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.puyguilhem.monuments-nationaux.fr\/\">Puyguilhem<\/a>\u00a0(16C), with its Loire valley-style architecture; and the majestic and imposing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chateau-hautefort.com\/\">Hautefort<\/a>\u00a0castle, just a stone\u2019s throw from the Auv\u00e9z\u00e8re valley.\u00a0Also worth a visit are the Ch\u00e2teau de\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chateaudelosse.com\/\">Losse<\/a>, its silhouette reflected in the V\u00e9z\u00e8re river; the Ch\u00e2teau de\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/castelnaud.com\/\">Castelnaud\u00a0<\/a>on the southern bank of the Dordogne, standing\u00a0opposite\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marqueyssac.com\/?lang=en\">Marqueyssac<\/a>\u00a0and its gardens; and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chateau-beynac.com\/?lang=en\">Beynac<\/a>, a formidable fortress dating from the Middle Ages.\u00a0Bourdeilles castle\u00a0represents two very different periods, including a feudal fortress and a Renaissance pleasure castle with a marvellous collection of period furniture. Don\u2019t miss\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.milandes.com\/en\/\">Les Milandes<\/a>, a castle that belonged to Josephine Baker and Jo Bouillon. The Purple P\u00e9rigord also has its fair share of castles, including those of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chateaudelanquais.fr\/\">Lanquais<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chateau-monbazillac.com\/en\/\">Monbazillac<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chateau-biron.fr\/en\">Biron<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Churches and abbeys<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13111 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lesmagnolias-perigord.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/geschiedenis2-611x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"611\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lesmagnolias-perigord.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/geschiedenis2-611x400.jpg 611w, https:\/\/www.lesmagnolias-perigord.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/geschiedenis2.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 611px) 100vw, 611px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Early_Christian_art_and_architecture\">The\u00a0early Christian<\/a>\u00a0art\u00a0is abundantly represented in the Dordogne.\u00a0Located along the UNESCO World Heritage route to Santiago de Compostela, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloitre-cadouin.fr\/en\">the\u00a0Abbaye de Cadouin<\/a>\u00a0is the\u00a0most important example of monastic architecture in the P\u00e9rigord.<br \/>Its cloister is a masterpiece of the Flamboyant Gothic style of architecture, dating from the 15C and 16C.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amiscathedralesaintfront.fr\/cathedrale-saint-front-perigueux\">The Cath\u00e9drale Saint-Front<\/a>\u00a0in P\u00e9rigueux also stands along the same pilgrim\u2019s route. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abbaye-chancelade.com\/\">The\u00a0Abbaye de Chancelade<\/a>, near P\u00e9rigueux, is another architectural gem worthy of particular note.On the border of the Dordogne and the Charente, the Romanesque churches around Rib\u00e9rac,mostly built during the 12C, are a charming feature of the small villages of the Dronne valley. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abbaye-echourgnac.org\/\">Abbaye d\u2019\u00c9chourgnac<\/a>\u00a0in the middle of the Double forest is a working abbey where the\u00a0nuns still produce excellent jams and the P\u00e9rigord\u2019s oldest cheese, the Trappe d\u2019\u00c9chourgn.<\/p>\n<h3>Prehistory. In our ancestors\u2019 footsteps \u2013 450,000 years of history<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/85\">V\u00e9z\u00e8re valley<\/a>, which takes its name from the river running through it, is\u00a0also known as the Valley of Mankind. This valley is a site of exceptional interest, with 147 prehistoric sites dating from the Palaeolithic Age and 25 painted caves. At the heart of this shrine to prehistory is the famous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lascaux\">Lascaux cave<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 nicknamed the prehistoric Sistine Chapel \u2013 surrounded by 15 UNESCO world heritage sites. Homo sapiens settled in the\u00a0limestone cliffs here, and it was also in this valley,\u00a0particularly around Lascaux, that prehistoric art first\u00a0developed. In Montignac, the original Lascaux cave (dubbed the \u201cSistine Chapel\u00a0of Prehistory\u201d) is no longer open to the public but a cave-full size shows\u00a0faithful reproductions of many of its most beautiful frescoes.The two galleries give a beautiful and clear\u00a0illustration of\u00a0wall paintings\u00a0\u00a0from Cro-Magnon through to Magdalenian man.\u00a0<em><strong>Insider Tip:<\/strong>\u00a0In summer, tickets for Lascaux must be reserved by phone (055 351 9623) 3 to 4 days prior to your visit and are purchased in Montignac, next to the tourist office. Tours in English are available<\/em>.There is a concentration of major sites in and around Les Eyzies de\u00a0Tayac, which together form a coherent group of prehistoric remains:\u00a0these include paintings in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/font-de-gaume.monuments-nationaux.fr\/\">Font de Gaume<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/barabahau.free.fr\/\">Bara-Bahau<\/a>\u00a0caves; the engravings at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hominides.com\/html\/lieux\/grotte-combarelles.php\">Les Combarelles<\/a>; the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hominides.com\/html\/lieux\/abri-poisson.php\">Abri du Poisson<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/donsmaps.com\/bernifal.html\">Bernifal<\/a>; the Abri Pataud;\u00a0Laugerie Haute en Laugerie\u00a0Basse.\u00a0At the heart of this open-air \u201cmuseum\u201d in the V\u00e9z\u00e8re valley,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/musee-prehistoire-eyzies.fr\/en\">the\u00a0National Museum of Prehistory\u00a0<\/a>reflects the continuing\u00a0developments in archaeological research.
